We have a fully functional, brand-new 0-Lux Infrared (IR) capable Sony Camcorder CCD-TR517 that has a re-modified re-enabled Niteshot function that permits you to shoot in broad daylight with full shutter and aperture control.  This modified camera is completely normal as a regular Handycam but and can also film at over 1400nm even in daylight.  You can use this as your regular camcorder and also as your infrared camcorder.

All currently manufactured Sony camcorders will shoot a washed-out picture in daylight situations when in Niteshot mode without an IR filter!  For a brief period a few years ago, some Sony handycams/handicams could shoot in daylight when in 0-Lux Niteshot mode.  Then, some users discovered the ability to see through some fabrics in certain situations (The infamous X-Ray effect).  When Sony found out, they changed the camcorders so that when you are in Niteshot mode, the aperture is forced to full open and slow shutter speed.  The result is that if you try shooting in daylight situations when in Niteshot mode, your picture will be completely washed-out and overexposed.  Further, even if you use neutral density filters to compensate, the depth of field is very shallow meaning that your focus will only be correct in a narrow range.  Also, the slow shutter speed will blur moving objects.

Don't be mislead by others selling normal camcorders with the Niteshot feature.  Unless the camcorder has been re-enabled, the you may not be able to shoot outdoors in Niteshot mode will be with the addition of neutral density filters depending on the light and your particular model camera.  Make sure when somebody tells you the camcorder is "modified" that you understand if it was modified to shoot Niteshot during the day or modified by Sony NOT to shoot during the day!

This camcorder retains full functionality in regular mode and looks absolutely identical to the normal camcorder meaning you can use this just like a normal camcorder in regular situations.  However, when you want to shoot in Niteshot mode, you just move the Niteshot switch, and the camera shoots in Niteshot mode in daylight with aperture and shutter control turned on in full automaticWhen in Niteshot mode, this camera does turn on the invisible Niteshot illuminator.

This camera has exceptional IR sensitivity - even better than some of the very expensive Sony camcorders we have tested.

Recommended:  To fully use all the capabilities of this camera, you should also use an Infrared (IR) filter with the camera.  You can supply your own or use our own excellent filters such as the X-Nite830, X-Nite850, X-Nite1000 and X-NiteXDP.  For more information on the filters, click here.

A word of caution:  Since this camcorder has been modified, if you do need Sony service under warranty (90 parts and labor, 1 year parts), it is possible that Sony might refuse to service the camera.  However, they probably won't notice the modification, and the modification has no effect on the reliability of the camcorder.

Our warranty:  You get a  brand new camcorder with a fully modified Niteshot function.  The camcorder is guaranteed to work perfectly out of the box.  When using the camcorder in normal mode, the camcorder will function exactly the same as the unmodified camcorder.  When in Niteshot mode without an IR filter, colors will be tinted brown because the removal of the IR blocking filter tints the picture.  When in Niteshot mode and using an IR filter, the image will be tinted green.  All shutter and aperture controls guaranteed to work when in Niteshot mode.  All normally supplied accessories are included.  We do recommend you also get some IR filters like our X-Nite 850nm or X-Nite 1000nm to go with the camera so you can fully appreciate its usefulness.
