Infrared filters have many different uses such as

bulletPhotographic effects - IR Filters give the still and video photographer expressive and unusual effects.
bulletPolice and detective forensic work - IR filters sometimes permit normally invisible stains and modified items visible
bulletDocument analysis - IR filters are sometimes used find erased signatures, damaged and altered documents.  Some analysis is done using the advanced IR photoluminescence effect where a document is illuminated with Ultraviolet light and photographed with IR filters.  Some inks will fluoresce IR when illuminated with UV.
bulletFactory automation - IR filters are sometimes used to detect filled bottles, find defects, distinguish items and more.
bulletScientific experiments and laboratory use
bulletPlant vegetation analysis and aerial photography - Vegetation looks dramatically different when photographed in Infrared.  Governments have used IR to find illegal marijuana fields, map different plant growths and many other uses.

Note: We specifically don't recommend photographing individuals with IR filters or otherwise without their knowledge.  IR can sometimes see things that persons may not want seen.  Besides, the person may not want to be photographed at all.
